Kilkee
Golf Club celebrated the centenary of its establishment
in 1986 and in 2008 celebrated the centenary of one
of the longest running Golf competitions in the country
- the Kilkee Cup Matchplay. In 1908 the inaugural winner
Mr. B. Blood had his name inscribed on the sterling
silver Cup and every year since, the proud winner has
followed suit, with the notable exception of the war
years and the "troubles" when winners weren't
recorded. In total there are 83 different names on the
Cup with 8 double winners and only one triple winner,
the late great Limerick golfer J.J. Griffin, who was
victorious in 1976, 1977, and 1981.
The Cup itself, in the shape of a golf ball, with golf
clubs supporting it on a wooden base, is in remarkable
condition, considering that until recently the winner
was allowed take it home for the year! Many rumors exist
as to the origin of the cup, some local historians suggest
that the cup was donated to the Golf Club by the more
affluent Kilkee Lawn Tennis Club, others suggest that
it had been fashioned from the headlight of an old Bentley
Motor Car. In any event it is a treasured piece of silverware
and it is the dream of all club members to have their
name added to the illustrious roll of honour, having
vanquished all comers in single combat.
The format of the Competition is Men's Open Matchplay
with one round each day beginning on Monday 20th July
and the Final played on Saturday 25th July. For players
knocked out in the early rounds, the Kilkee Plate singles
competition is played on Thursday 24th July.
